SUMMARY:Family Business or Social Problem? The Cost of Unreported Domestic Violence
DESCRIPTION:Examining Social and Judicial Interventions and In-School Peer Effect. An EPI policy talk by Scott Carrell\, University of California\, Davis \nAbout the Topic: \nSocial interest in problems such as domestic violence is typically motivated by concerns regarding equity\, rather than efficiency. However\, we document that taking steps to reduce domestic violence by reporting it yields substantial benefits to external parties. Specifically\, we find that while children exposed to as-yet-unreported domestic violence reduce the achievement of their classroom peers\, these costs disappear completely once the parent reports the violence to the court. This suggests the public has an interest in helping families overcome their problems in general\, and to report domestic violence in particular. It also suggests that social and judicial interventions may help combat negative peer effects in schools.

SUMMARY:Neurobehavioral Challenges in Primary Care Pediatrics
DESCRIPTION:Novel approaches for assessment and treatment of complex disorders (including traumatic stress and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders). \n– “There is a large body of evidence to support the effects of toxic stress and adverse childhood experiences (ACE) on children’s brain development and well being. Many children are now presenting to an unprepared PCP practice with neurobehavioral challenges. While much of this knowledge may be intuitive (i.e. poverty\, prenatal alcohol exposure\, and exposure to violence impacts children adversely) routine assessment of ACE in primary care settings typically does not occur and treatment interventions are not fully implemented. The assessment of children with neurobehavioral challenges requires a broad knowledge base and effective treatment requires collaborative therapeutic networks within communities as well as complex novel medication strategies. Inadequate PCP implementation of assessment and treatment of childhood neurobehavioral disorders is a quality gap. It is the intent and objective of this conference to address this practice gap. \nREGISTER NOW to sign up. There are only 100 seats available!

SUMMARY:Keeping them Connected: The Role of Parent-Child Visitation In Promoting Child Well-Being and Achieving Timely Permanency
DESCRIPTION:Keeping them Connected: The Role of Parent-Child Visitation In Promoting Child Well-Being and Achieving Timely Permanency\nTBD \nThursday\, Nov 8 at 9:00 AM EST \nThis training will be held at the Lexington Hotel\, 925 South Creyts Road Lansing\, Michigan 48917 \nStudies have shown that parent-child visitation is an essential component for ensuring child well-being and achieving timely permanency for children served by Michigan’s child welfare system. Frequent parental involvement that is well planned\, purposeful\, and progressive\, eases a child’s anxiety\, reduces the impact of trauma caused by separation from the child’s parent\, and improves the child’s overall well-being while in foster care. Such visitation has been shown to shorten a child’s stay in foster care and increase the likelihood that safe and permanent reunification will occur. This multidisciplinary training will illustrate the importance of maximizing parent-child contact to an audience of judges\, attorneys\, caseworkers\, foster parents\, and other child welfare professionals. The training will also highlight the need for reasonable efforts to protect\, promote\, and improve the connections between parents and their children in out-of-home placements. \nREGISTER

DESCRIPTION:Melanie de Vries\, Grant Writing Consultant \nWednesday\, Sep 12 at 9:00 AM EDT \nTarget Audience: This training is open to individuals interested in applying for grants to implement programs in their court\, community\, or child welfare organizations. Limited space is available. \nThroughout the country\, child welfare stakeholders continue to collaborate in an effort to develop and implement innovative programs designed to improve outcomes for children and families who find themselves in the court system. All grant seekers\, regardless of their specialty\, must develop a basic understanding and awareness of grant writing. This course will present a blueprint for the grant writing process that will prepare you to write your grant successfully. Along the way\, the presenter will provide examples of common mistakes and offer advice on how to improve your odds of winning a grant. \nThis training will be held at the Hall of Justice\, 925 West Ottawa\, Lansing\, 48915. \nREGISTER
