SUMMARY:Neurobehavioral Challenges in Primary Care Pediatrics
DESCRIPTION:Novel approaches for assessment and treatment of complex disorders (including traumatic stress and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders). \n– “There is a large body of evidence to support the effects of toxic stress and adverse childhood experiences (ACE) on children’s brain development and well being. Many children are now presenting to an unprepared PCP practice with neurobehavioral challenges. While much of this knowledge may be intuitive (i.e. poverty\, prenatal alcohol exposure\, and exposure to violence impacts children adversely) routine assessment of ACE in primary care settings typically does not occur and treatment interventions are not fully implemented. The assessment of children with neurobehavioral challenges requires a broad knowledge base and effective treatment requires collaborative therapeutic networks within communities as well as complex novel medication strategies. Inadequate PCP implementation of assessment and treatment of childhood neurobehavioral disorders is a quality gap. It is the intent and objective of this conference to address this practice gap. \nREGISTER NOW to sign up. There are only 100 seats available!

SUMMARY:Keeping them Connected: The Role of Parent-Child Visitation In Promoting Child Well-Being and Achieving Timely Permanency
DESCRIPTION:Keeping them Connected: The Role of Parent-Child Visitation In Promoting Child Well-Being and Achieving Timely Permanency\nTBD \nThursday\, Nov 8 at 9:00 AM EST \nThis training will be held at the Lexington Hotel\, 925 South Creyts Road Lansing\, Michigan 48917 \nStudies have shown that parent-child visitation is an essential component for ensuring child well-being and achieving timely permanency for children served by Michigan’s child welfare system. Frequent parental involvement that is well planned\, purposeful\, and progressive\, eases a child’s anxiety\, reduces the impact of trauma caused by separation from the child’s parent\, and improves the child’s overall well-being while in foster care. Such visitation has been shown to shorten a child’s stay in foster care and increase the likelihood that safe and permanent reunification will occur. This multidisciplinary training will illustrate the importance of maximizing parent-child contact to an audience of judges\, attorneys\, caseworkers\, foster parents\, and other child welfare professionals. The training will also highlight the need for reasonable efforts to protect\, promote\, and improve the connections between parents and their children in out-of-home placements. \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Writing for Resources: Grant Writing for Court and Child Welfare Professionals
DESCRIPTION:Melanie de Vries\, Grant Writing Consultant \nWednesday\, Sep 12 at 9:00 AM EDT \nTarget Audience: This training is open to individuals interested in applying for grants to implement programs in their court\, community\, or child welfare organizations. Limited space is available. \nThroughout the country\, child welfare stakeholders continue to collaborate in an effort to develop and implement innovative programs designed to improve outcomes for children and families who find themselves in the court system. Lack of financial resources is a consistent barrier to implementation of these programs. As a result\, the interest in federal and charitable grant opportunities has peaked. However\, applying for grant programs requires specialized knowledge that includes understanding exactly what the grantor requires in the application process. All grant seekers\, regardless of their specialty\, must develop a basic understanding and awareness of grant writing. This course will present a blueprint for the grant writing process that will prepare you to write your grant successfully. Along the way\, the presenter will provide examples of common mistakes and offer advice on how to improve your odds of winning a grant. \nThis training will be held at the Hall of Justice\, 925 West Ottawa\, Lansing\, 48915. \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Investigating and addressing Child Abuse and Neglect as a cause of infant mortality
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, October 25\, 2011\, 2:00pm – 3:00pm Central Time \nRegistration Website: http://citymatch.org/ppor_net.php \nIs child abuse and neglect (CAN) a big problem in your community? If so\, would your PPOR investigations discover it? How can communities address this issue? The answers might not be as clear as you think. \nWhen communities using PPOR find a large portion of their excess mortality in the Infant Health period of risk (post-neonatal\, non-VLBW deaths)\, they investigate the reasons for the excess mortality using the Underlying Cause of Death code from the death certificate. While many of these deaths are coded as SIDS or R99\, several communities have found high rates of unintentional (accidental) and intentional injuries\, and there may be communities that don’t find them when they are actually there. \nOur presenter this month\, Dr. Steve Wirtz\, has studied surveillance of CAN extensively in California using vital records\, child death review\, child welfare\, and justice system data. In this presentation you will learn about under-reporting of child-maltreatment fatalities in the vital records system\, and about how professional and community groups might improve identification and investigation of maltreatment deaths through other data sources and local child death review processes. In addition to investigating deaths\, PPOR community groups may be able to use CAN data systems to gain insight into risk factors and prevention strategies for these deaths. Strategies that prevent deaths are also likely to prevent serious injuries and other CAN incidents. \nPresenter:\nPresented by Steve Wirtz\, PhD\nSafe and Active Communities Branch\nCalifornia Department of Public Health* \nCo-author:\nJaspreet Samra\, MPH\, California Epidemiological Investigation Service Fellow \, California Department of Public Health*
