Neurobehavioral Challenges in Primary Care Pediatrics

December 15, 2012 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

Novel approaches for assessment and treatment of complex disorders (including traumatic stress and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders).

– “There is a large body of evidence to support the effects of toxic stress and adverse childhood experiences (ACE) on children’s brain development and well being. Many children are now presenting to an unprepared PCP practice with neurobehavioral challenges. While much of this knowledge may be intuitive (i.e. poverty, prenatal alcohol exposure, and exposure to violence impacts children adversely) routine assessment of ACE in primary care settings typically does not occur and treatment interventions are not fully implemented. The assessment of children with neurobehavioral challenges requires a broad knowledge base and effective treatment requires collaborative therapeutic networks within communities as well as complex novel medication strategies. Inadequate PCP implementation of assessment and treatment of childhood neurobehavioral disorders is a quality gap. It is the intent and objective of this conference to address this practice gap.
