The Impact of Parental Incarceration on Children in the Child Welfare System
April 23, 2013 @ 9:30 am - 4:00 pm
The purpose of this training is to increase knowledge, awareness, and skills of child welfare professionals in responding to the needs of children in the child welfare system with incarcerated parents. The speaker, Ann Adalist-Estrin, Director of the National Resource Center on Children and Families of Incarcerated Parents, will guide participants through a reflection on their knowledge, experiences, assumptions, beliefs, perspectives, and biases about incarcerated parents and their families. The program features information and current data to aid participants in understanding the impact of parental arrest, incarceration, and reentry on child development, family dynamics, and community functioning. Ms. Adalist-Estrin will use group discussion, case scenarios, films, and lecture to engage participants in learning about and implementing specific strategies for navigating the obstacles to identifying and working with children who have an incarcerated parent.
Target Audience: Judges, referees, attorneys for children and parents, and caseworkers for the Michigan Department of Human Services, tribes, and private agencies.
