To help a suicidal youth, adults must manage their own negative emotions. This requires understanding of and empathy for the suicidal wish. Here we explore a cornerstone of preventing suicide—empathy. Part I of our new Well Aware webinar series on Portals to Prevention features communications that suicidal youngsters left before they died by their own hand; and reflections from adults who were suicidal in childhood, but are alive and thriving today.
